Glossary

Butler Field – The Million Dollar Band’s practice field, located in between the Frank M. Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama and Arby’s on University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Drill sets – A drill set is a set of coordinates band members use to determine where they stand in each formation during a marching band show. Drill sets come in a variety of forms. The Million Dollar Band uses drill sets in the form of charts. Each member of the band is assigned a number and letter, which corresponds to a dot on the chart that they must match the position of on the field.

Drum Majors – Drum majors are the student leaders of the entire band. The Million Dollar Band has four drum majors who dress in gray uniforms (white prior to 2010) and conduct the band during each rehearsal, game, pre-game, and halftime performance.

Elephant Stomp – Before every home football game, the Million Dollar Band performs the “elephant stomp.” Each section in the band warms up at various locations on the Quad. Afterwards, the entire band meets on the steps of Gorgas Library. The MDB and University cheerleaders lead the crowd in several cheers in a 10-minute pep rally. After this pep rally, the band lines up along Colonial Drive and marches into Bryant-Denny Stadium for the football game.

“Go Alabama” – A tune played in the stands during football games, though, over recent years, it has been played more rarely.

Phi Beta Mu – A national bandmaster’s honorary fraternity.

Pre-rehearsal Procedure – With the exception of the trumpet section and drumline who warm up on Butler Field itself, each instrumental section warms up behind the field. The auxiliary (colorguard and majorettes) also warm up on the field.

Sections – The band is divided into sections based on instrumentation or position. For example, the students who play the clarinet are known as the clarinet section.

Show Music v. Stand Music – Show music refers to music that would be played in a halftime show at a football game. Stand music refers to music that is played up in the stands of a football game or a pep rally. These are the popular tunes fans hear throughout the game after each play is performed. All of this music is memorized during sectional rehearsal time.

“Yea! Alabama” – The University of Alabama fight song.
