Between the months of August and December, Butler Field is home to the University’s Million Dollar Band, a group of students who perform at various sporting events throughout the year. The band was formed in 1912 with just 14 members. In 2012, the band consisted of 426 performing members.

The band has always been a family environment. Bonds are created, and each member can rely on another for support. As a member of the band for the last four years, I have witnessed good and bad days on Butler Field. Some days, the morale and energy level of the band is high, but, every so often, a slump occurs. Regardless, Butler Field serves as a place where band members can share stories about their days, lives, and upcoming events.

Unless lightning strikes, we rehearse outside on Butler Field. The band holds practices in the blistering heat, heavy winds, and all kinds of rain every weekday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in the morning before almost every home football game day. Each season, the band prepares at least three halftime shows and a pregame show. The markings on the field help band members create forms using drill charts that outline each segment of a show. Each show has roughly 30 to 40 drill sets.

Over my time on Butler Field, I have met hundreds of different people, each with their own story, mannerisms, and quirks. Despite these differences, each person works hard for the same goals – to better the band and perform well for thousands of Alabama fans.
